Wollaston was an English medical doctor, ornithologist, botanist, climber, and explorer. After qualifying as a surgeon in 1903, Wollaston decided to spend his life on exploration and natural history, travelling extensively; he wrote books about his travels and work, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1907. He took up an offer from as a tutor at Cambridge, and was shot dead by Douglas Potts, a deranged undergraduate student. [23720]

Eighteen Years On Lake Bangweula

nd 1933.  1st Edn,.  The Field.  xvi ? 376 pages, large 8vo 78 photographic illustrations on 76 individual plates double page coloured front end paper map of LAKE BANGWEULU. Presentation inscription on half title "Presented by the author to C. E Radclyffe May 1933" with Radclyffe's bookplate to verso blank of the front end paper, Radclyffe wrote Big Game Hunting in Alaska. The contents clean and tight, the original mustard yellow cloth with native vignette to the upper board, the cloth clean and free of marks the binding tight with no chips or splits a very small bump to front upper corner. A scare title and even more so in this condition the cloth so often found soiled. Hughes travelled to Nyasaland in 1901 as an assistant native commissioner in the British South Africa Company, eventually resigning his post in favour of becoming a full-time hunter and trader. Over the next decade, he explored and hunted around Lake Bangweulu and its attendant swampy region and the rivers Chambesi and Luapula. There are numerous hunting incidents, particularly after elephant, lion, buffalo, hippopotamus, and rhinoceros, with cheetah bagged near the Luena River. In addition, eland, sable puku, sitatunga, warthog and, other game was collected. He also provides advice for future sportsmen. "Always aim low at a buffalo ? his chest is only two feet from the ground; and never fire unless you can see him properly. " This is an excellent work of hunting and adventure with wonderful details of the area ( todays Zambia), and scarce Czech 135 [22574]

Todd 1933" Hughes notes in the preface in 1911 he started organising hunting expeditions only to be stopped by WW1 he lists his 6 clients in the order they took place "Mr. J. Todd's expedition" being number 6. There are 6 pages with reference to Todd which are noted in the index 3 have been written in. Each page has been marked with a small cloth tag to the front edge. 2 of the pages have handwritten notes in ink detailing the game being shot and the rifle by Todd. The contents clean and tight, neatly recased in the original mustard yellow cloth with native vignette to the upper board, some light fading and dust soiling to the cloth.
