Original tan cloth with game birds' vignette and title printed in black to the upper board and spine, spine darkened as usual lesser so to the boards. A title where the cloth is often affected by discoloration. The author covers capercaillie, blackgame, grouse and ptarmigan, with notes on the life history and sporting of each bird, (the 1st edition contained colour plates and limited to 550 copies and was a folio edition). A classic work on wildfowling in Scotland dealing with the pursuit of ducks. Publishers' olive-green cloth with gilt pig sticking scene to upper board of both volumes. Personal presentation inscription to ? title page of volume 2 "To my journalistic mentor E Sacks with the Authors best wishes Sept 1893". Below are some handwritten lines (I believe which are taken from a song by Campbell of Saddell). Brown enjoyed considerable sport in India he recounts pig sticking, elephant and tiger shooting stalking samba and bear etc he details tiger measurements and weights. Unusual to find a signed copy. A monument to the 2 woodcock was presented to W.Coke of Holkham in 1834. An etching of the monument is used as the frontis and part for the gilt vignette to the upper cover.
