Engraved business card 9cm x 6cm the card notes "Agents For Eley Bros Ammunition Curtis & Harvey & J Halls Gunpowders Chilled And Patent Shot Etc. B.N was many years with J. Purdey 314 ? Oxford St London". Benjamin Norman was the son of William Norman Jnr (a butcher) and Ann. He was born in 1833 in Eye in Suffolk. In about 1847 he was apprenticed to a gun maker, but whether it was a local gunmaker or not is not known. but it may well be that he was apprenticed to James Purdey, he reportedly worked for Purdey (amongst others?), possibly as an outworker His business in Framlingham was recorded as a gunmaker in Castle Street only from 1878. In the 1881 census he described himself as a master gun maker,

Handwritten note to the front paste down noting the book was presented to the Royal United Service Institution by Major. Longstaff May 1933, to front free end paper the Institutions book plate. Bound in a full dark red morroco with gilt tile to the upper board with a central large Royal Crest, within decorative rolled gilt frames, and repeated to the rear cover. The spine in 6 compartments with gilt title, compartments with ornate tooling. Some surface rubbing to corners and edges, the bottom of spine chipped. A very good copy with the provenance of the Royal Crest. The instructions cover the use of the The Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle-musket, Royal Small Arms Factory developed the Pattern 1853 Enfield in the 1850s. The 39 in (99 cm) barrel had three grooves, with a 1:78 rifling twist, and was fastened to the stock with three metal bands, so that the rifle was often called a "three band" model. The rifle's cartridges contained 2+1/2 drams, or 68 grains (4.4 g)[3] of gunpowder, and the ball was typically a 530-grain (34 g).
