DALE R.F.S.compiled by |
Angling Notebook and Diary
May 1924 - March 1964.
The notebook/diary is actually a small folio ledger 44cm x 29cm containing 600 pages around 1/2 of the pages are blank. The fishing section covers approx. 220 pages. The diary is written in a clear neat legible hand with occasional relevant newspaper cutting tipped in. The book covers Dale's coarse fishing and match fishing in detail. Dales appears to be from the Walthamstowe area and the Walthamstowe angling club appears regularly in his notes, he fished in East Anglia and the South East including Lea, Thames, Stour, Ouse etc., The diary uses both sides of the open page giving columns for date, day, place, numbers of fish, sizeable fish, total. By the mid 1930s he added weather, best fish, swim, notes. All are in great detail i.e. 12.8.29 Sat, Waltham Powder Mill Lane about 10 yards below bridge of two bushes on opposite bank behind pav., 6 roach (4g) 9 dace (7g), dull N wind, RSAF club had special permission to fish from road to gates of Gunpowder factory was a bit of A with Ted White, weight 7 dace 3lb 6oz, total 15. As the notebook developed the remarks became longer and more detailed especially relating to his match fishing, 5 pages summarise the competitions entered, won, prize money, place etc., The diary ends at the bottom of the page Sunday 8 march 1964, the following pages are ruled and titled but unused. Dale wrote 2 articles for the Fishing Gazette in 1934 under the name "Contray" Bream Fishing in Norfolk's shallow broads followed by another article in 1935 and letters and comments to the angling press. Cuttings of the articles are tipped onto pages. There are also 7 pages on sea fishing in a similar vein. At the end of the book are 18 pages on his cacti collection also his motoring expenses + 2 pages on money matters + 5 pages on Rudge motor cycling expenses. The book is internally clean, the original 1/2 red leather is rubbed on corners and edges, the spine has split down one side and is loose but holding, the biding is tight. A unique insight into one man's fishing career painstakingly recorded over 40 years.
