PULMAN George |
The Book Of The Axe Containing A Piscatorial Description Of That Stream And A History Of All The Parishes And Remarkable Spots Upon Its Bank
1875.
4th rewritten and greatly enlarged. Edn,.
Longman and Co.
VI 906 pages, 15 full page illus, large folding map, woodcut illus throughout the volume, 4cm closed tear to the map, some spotting to title page and blank verso of map, front hinge paper cracked but a tight copy, bound in contemporary 1/2 dark green morroco, gilt decoration to spine, binding clean and tight. Tipped onto FEP a newspaper review of the book dated 1875, pasted to front past down folding memoriam card from the funeral of Pulman in February 1880 at the age of 60. Unusual to find. the map is not laid down on linen as usually found, possibly a presentation binding but there is nothing to prove this. The previous edition was 20 years earlier, the author has accumulated fresh matter to an extent which constitutes a claim for the present edition being almost a new work. Pulman takes the Axe from rise to mouth and to describe the piscatorial attractions and the scenery it flows through. WS173.
