Bound in the publisher's olive-green cloth gilt and brown scene of a sunrise with 2 zebras to upper board, gilt title, and vignette of antelope horns to spine and gilt bustard to rear. An exceptional copy the contents free of foxing or marks. The cloth clean and fresh with no chips or splits. Oates hunted elephant, kuon, lion, buffalo etc. on his expedition to explore the region of the Victoria Falls late in 1874. On his return journey he was stricken with fever and died shortly after. C.G. Oates edited his brother's notebooks and published them in 1881, many of the first editions were destroyed by fire. The second edition included updated information not found in the 1st + a six-page preface by C.G. Oates explaining the nature of a second edition,"his account of Matabeleland is one of the best of the earlier modern works of the country" Mendelssohn Vol 2 112. Czech 210.
