Summary: xi 259 pages, rewritten and revised by the author Blacker "himself fishing tackle maker 54 Dean St Soho", 22 engraved plates including the title page, coloured frontis and 17 hand coloured plates of fly-tying material and flies: 3 uncoloured plates of minnow, pike, and paternoster and barbel tackle, the plates all on card. Recased in the original full black leather binding with the original end papers retained the spine relayed, gilt borders to covers. Blacker worked at 54 Dean Street, Soho, London from 1842 - 1857. In 1842 he published The Art Of Angling And Complete System Of Fly Making. The book was reissued in 1843 as Blacker's Catechism Of Fly Making, this edition contained actual flies, the numbering of flies differ in some copies. The book was reissued in 1855 as Blacker's Art Of Fly Making. This copy is an early issue containing the scarce coloured frontis. There is no plate list, other than a list of plates which is part of a four-page review of the book dated April 29, 1855, referring to the recently published Art Of Fly Making. The list calls for 22 plates including the engraved title page; the review of the book by Bells Life In London it is noted that "the book contains no fewer than 17 engraved plates" and how "Blacker supervised the colouring of the plates to the highest standard" the advert is paginated v - viii. It has been noted that Blacker issued many of his books to order, this would account for the variations to books containing flies. I have handled other copies of the 1855 edition where all the plates are uncoloured or differ in number. This copy has one plate placed in the wrong place pp 100 rather than at pp110.
